Literature Reviews

Reviews of the literature are conducted for various reasons:

  • To provide background and context for new or expanded research
  • To bring together all the relevant or important literature on a topic
  • To discover developments in a disclipline
  • To determine gaps in research

Regardless the reason, a good search of the literature should include at least two databases, i.e. PubMed, Cochrane, or Web of Science. A very thorough search would include Google Scholar, and, depending on the research question, one might include CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, and web sites for Professional Organizations.

Ask a librarian for assistance in formulating an effective search strategy. This will help you in obtaining relevant results, and will save you time.
